A window tax to curb the Premier League’s big spenders | Brief letters

Barney Ronay makes a lot of good points in his article about the recent Premier League transfer window (Premier League money has lost all meaning amid chaotic spectacle of excess, 2 September). I have one suggestion to add: a windfall tax. Levied on the spenders, it could raise money for the grassroots of the game and might act as an incentive to reduce the ludicrous fees being splashed around, which, as Ronay points out, are eventually paid for by the fans. We could call it a window tax.

Sad to hear Ski Sunday is being axed (Report, 1 September). It is essential viewing for me. Once the rousing signature tune is over, the commentary from a far-off land about a sport I know nothing about, accompanied by gentle swishing and cowbells, has me in a deep afternoon nap in seconds. Irreplaceable.
