Schlager becomes Forest's first signing under Glasner

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of free agent Xaver Schlager on a two-year deal.

Schlager reunites with head coach Oliver Glasner, who managed the midfielder at Wolfsburg, after his contract with RB Leipzig expired at the end of last month.

The 28-year-old made 108 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig in four seasons, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists.

He missed most of the 2024-25 campaign due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, but returned as vice-captain last season.

Schlager also featured at the 2026 World Cup for Austria, making four appearances before they were knocked out in the round of 32 by eventual winners Spain.

"It is a huge honour to join Nottingham Forest. It is a very traditional club with a big history of winning two European Cups under Brian Clough," said Schlager.

"I wanted a new challenge and to join a club with good players, and I am happy to be reunited with Oliver, who I know from my time at Wolfsburg.

"The club has big ambitions and so do I. I want to be back in European competitions, and we have a good chance.

"It is the best feeling to play internationally during the week, and I want to achieve that.

"I am very happy and proud to be here, and I want to give my everything for the club and its supporters."

Schlager could make his competitive debut for Forest on August 22 when they face Leeds United in their first game of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
