'We definitely need to sign a winger' – Iraola on Liverpool transfer targets

Andoni Iraola said there are "obvious situations" for Liverpool to sign players, with the Spaniard identifying a new winger as the top of his priorities this summer.

Iraola was announced as Arne Slot's successor last month on a two-year contract and has already got down to business ahead of his first campaign in charge at Anfield.

Liverpool are currently in the United States on a pre-season tour, where they will face Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds United in the first glimpse at Iraola's side will look like.

The Reds have already announced the £40m signing of World Cup winner Victor Munoz from Osasuna, but are in desperate need for reinforcements.

Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate all departed Merseyside on free transfers at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, though Jeremy Jacquet has now officially joined Liverpool after a deal was agreed with Rennes last season.

It has been reported that RB Leipzig duo Yan Diomande and Antonio Nusa along with Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola are high on Liverpool's wishlist, and Iraola believes signing a winger is a must this summer.

"I think it is difficult to say a number. When the market is open, you have to always be open to new options to improve the squad," Iraola said.

"There are obvious situations where we need to sign players. Winger, for example, we definitely need to sign a winger.

"But there are other situations where we will have to analyse what the market gives you, what is the cost, how we also see the players we have.

"We have some tricky positions where we have injured players that we trust, but it is still not the ideal situation, so it will depend on a lot of things."

Iraola has previously stressed the need to sign more players despite Liverpool splashing out £450m last summer following their Premier League title triumph in 2024-25.

Alexander Isak arrived for a record-breaking fee, after the big-money additions of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez.

However, there could still be more departures. Alexis Mac Allister has been linked with a move away from Anfield despite having two years left on his current contract.

Mac Allister endured a difficult campaign in 2025-26, but he looked back to his best during Argentina's run to the World Cup final, and Iraola is keen for him to stay.

"I think Alexis has been one of the best players of the club last year and has had a very good World Cup," Iraola added.

"It is normal that other clubs want our best players, our good players. It always happens in other markets.

"But I want to, also as other clubs want, I want to keep my good players. I'm probably looking forward more to signing new players than the ones we have here."

Iraola is also hoping Alisson Becker will remain at Anfield, with the Brazil international a reported target for Serie A giants Juventus.

"I'm very happy with the situation we have right now in the goalkeeping area," Iraola said.

"Alisson is someone also in a changing room that has lost some references in terms of experience.

"I think he's someone that definitely will help us in this process of adaptation of the new signings, of the new players, the young players.

"We need the references like Virgil [van Dijk], like Alisson, like Joe Gomez, players that have been here for a long time."
