Report – Inter Preparing Formal Bid for England’s World Cup Breakout Star

Serie A champions Inter have reportedly joined the race to sign in-demand Tottenham Hotspur wingback Djed Spence. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the 25-year-old has become the club’s top target to fill Denzel Dumfries’ shoes.

Inter had hoped to replace the new Real Madrid star with Marco Palestra, only for the Italian prodigy to join Chelsea in a mega-money deal. Despite being on the verge of signing Anan Khalaili from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the player failed his medicals at San Siro, forcing the Nerazzurri to look elsewhere.

After weeks of relentless searching, Inter have landed on Spence, who enjoyed a dream World Cup campaign. Familiar with the Serie A setting, he spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Genoa. However, the Griffins were unable to meet the £8.5 million buyout clause, forcing the player to return to North London.

Things have since dramatically changed for Spence, who is now one of Europe’s most highly-rated wingbacks. Therefore, it’s hard to expect Roberto De Zerbi to let him leave without a fight.

Spence’s market value has skyrocketed during the World Cup, with Spurs currently asking for around €35 million. That’s €10m more than Inter agreed to pay Royale Union for Khalaili, and Beppe Marotta may have to break the bank if he’s to sign the Englishman.

Given Spence’s notable rise to stardom, that’s a small price to pay. Capable of operating on both flanks, Spence would add much-needed versatility and athleticism to Cristian Chivu’s system while providing a long-term solution to the void left by Dumfries.

At 25, he also fits Inter’s renewed strategy of investing in players entering their prime rather than relying on short-term fixes.
