Canada all but secured their place in the Round of 16 after their first-ever World Cup win in a strange game against Qatar. Jesse Marsch decided to rest Alphonso Davies for the entire game as FC Bayern's left-back works his way into full fitness.
Jonathan David was the standout player as he scored a hat-trick after his poor performance in the 1-1 draw with Bosnia & Herzegovina. Fellow striker Cyle Larin was once again on target as he opened the score before the Juventus man netted a first-half brace.
Between David's first two goals, Qatari fullback Homam Al-Amin was sent off for his challenge as a last defender. Julen Lopetegui's side were reduced to nine when Assim Madibo's foul most likely ended Ismaël Koné's tournament due to a broken leg early after the restart.
Luckily, Koné was in good spirits as he greeted the home fans on his way out of the stadium after receiving treatment on the pitch. The incident was also horrifying for Madibo, who was left in shock by the severity of Koné's injury. Nathan Saliba came on to replace Sassuolo's midfielder, and he immediately scored from a direct free-kick.
Saliba and the entire team send a message to Koné after Canada’s fourth goal. Fellow substitute Jacob Shaffellburg forced an own-goal as nine-man Qatar were unable to even do the basics at this point. David completed his hat-trick in injury-time as Canada recorded the biggest win by a CONCACAF team in the history of the World Cup.
After jubilation for their late draw against Switzerland, Qatar suffered their biggest defeat at the stage. However, they still have their fate on their hands as a win over Bosnia & Herzegovina would most probably be enough for a place in the Round of 32. Canada will certainly want to play at home for that round as a draw with Switzerland is enough for them to finish top of the group.
