Austria have been dealt a significant injury blow ahead of the World Cup, with Christoph Baumgartner set to miss the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Baumgartner suffered a thigh injury during the warm-up ahead of Austria’s 1–0 friendly win over Tunisia on Monday, and an MRI scan on Tuesday has confirmed that he will not be able to take part in the World Cup.

“This is, of course, very bitter news for Christoph and for us as a team. He is an important player and a key figure within our squad. Our full support now goes towards his recovery,” said Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick.

As for David Alaba, who was forced off at half-time, Austria received positive news as scans revealed no muscle injury. He will therefore travel to the United States with the rest of the squad as planned on Thursday.
