First reported by The Athletic, RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner is close to finally moving to the MLS, with San Jose his likely destination.

Werner has been linked with a move to the US for a while now, first with Leipzig’s sister club, New York Red Bulls and then several other teams throughout the league. Now, it looks like he will be moving to San Jose to join the Earthquakes.

Due to the rules in the MLS, Werner will be registered as a designated player, which means they are more likely to match his current salary at the Red Bull Arena.

**Sky Germany **reports that a secret meeting between the Earthquakes and Werner took place a couple of weeks ago. Due to Werner’s contract expiring in the summer, it should be easy for the MLS side to reach an agreement over a potential fee for the out of favour 29 year old.

The forward rejoined Leipzig in 2022 for €20m following his poor spell at Chelsea. Werner’s return to the club where he made his name was expected to see him rediscover his form, but he struggled and then spent two seasons on loan at Tottenham.

His return to the Red Bull Arena has seen him only play 13 minutes in the Bundesliga this season.
